SMUD vs PG&E — why it matters for permit coordination
The City of Sacramento and surrounding incorporated cities are served primarily by SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utility District) rather than PG&E. SMUD has its own interconnection process, its own NEM program, and its own timeline for meter work on panel upgrades and solar installations. Contractors who primarily work PG&E territory need to familiarize themselves with SMUD's specific requirements before their first Sacramento-area solar job.
SMUD is generally regarded as one of California's more contractor-friendly utilities from an interconnection standpoint, but the process is different enough from PG&E that assuming the same workflow will create errors.
